Once upon a time a domain launch was exciting (relatively speaking).
One of the downsides to so many new top level domains becoming available is that the sense of excitement is pretty much gone. Sure, you can get excited about one or two domain extensions, but when there’s a new one almost every single day it’s really hard to get excited about any of them.
However the upcoming launch of .blog, which entered sunrise yesterday, changes all that.
When I looked at the list of applied for strings after the “big reveal” a couple of years ago some left me confused, but a couple, including .blog, really excited me.
As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve been blogging for quite some time, so the concept of a domain extension just for blogs and bloggers really resonated with me. So I’m really delighted not only that .blog is going to be available to the public very soon, but also that we (Blacknight) were one of the first companies in the world to get our own .blog domain name and put it live!
The opportunities for personal and business bloggers with .blog domains are pretty much endless. Remember it’s a paradigm shift – the domain extension tells you that it’s a blog, so you don’t need to use a subdomain or include the term “blog” anywhere in the domain, as it’s already there.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of domains people register and what percentage of them get actively used ie. end up with content on them. As of now only a handful of “pioneer” domains are live including:
- Dave.blog – Dave Winer’s blog
- Matt.blog – Matt Mullenweg founder of WordPress
- Blacknight.blog – our company blog
- Design.blog
- Nominet.blog
If you want your own .blog domain name we’re taking orders now 🙂
